The German version has a typo that says it taps for {2} mana, which would make Rath's Edge one of the best lands ever printed despite the worthless second ability. Imagine the disappointment of a German player learning that this land only taps for {1}.

It's quite a bit scary that even though reversing the ability
(Take 1 damage, pay 4, destroy target land) is itself....umm 'good, ish, but not great'....this card as is is still actually playable.
This is a great way to teach people about non-basic lands and how important 'spells that don't cost deck space' are. This is actually a fair 2 star rating now. Back in the day, I might have said it was a 3.

Keldon Megaliths and Shivan Gorge are generally better than this.

Crucible of Worlds
Zuran Orb
Fastbond
The basis of many combos. The kill card is often suggested to be Banefire, but Rath's Edge is actually better because it is immune to Misdirection and Twincast, and it functions a mana provider until the combo is ready to go off.

Oh look, i'm still drawing lands I don't need. I know, I'll throw them at you and your Birds of Paradise.
If the colorless mana does not hurt your deck, then this should be considered.

Ooh, a legendary land! Rare indeed! Unfortunately, in this case, also crappy. True, it doesn't come into play tapped. That's a definite plus. But it only gives colorless mana, and its ability is horribly overcosted. Even if you didn't have to sacrifice the land, it would be bad. The one thing it has going for it is very few creatures have protection from lands.

Why are people giving this good votes?

Good flavor though! At rath's edge the land is falling apart, so of course elves fall into the abyss.
