I guess recover was too powerful, so they had to print a worse version of it.

This is a good retrieval effect. Two creatures with a single spell is no joke.
Yes, Death's Duet is better due to its less mana-intensity, but this is still not bad, and it's its worthy substitute in Limited, Standard and Modern, together with Macabre Waltz.
