An okay card. With this and Vengeful Pharaoh, I like that black seems to be taking a few baby steps into exploring classic Egyptian fantasy tropes. Wizards, just give us a zombie/skeleton Sphinx and I'll be impossibly happy.

Yes, you can. It is actually one of the main uses of this card. You attack with all you creatures once they are low on life. Should this guy not be blocked, you can 'eat' all the blocked creatures for more damage to the head. If it will win you the game, you eat every creature you got that won't be doing one or more damage to them. You could use it the ability to protect it from a blocking creature or to kill a blocked one, but I honestly don't think that would be worth it in all but the most extreme cases.
That is really the essence of 
. Win at all costs, no matter how much it might hurt you. A more flavorful version might have been "Sacrifice a creature, Pay 1 life: ~ get +2/+2 until end of turn."

I actually prefer this to Vampire Aristcrat et al due to its evasion and the fact that it gets a pemanent boost when you sacrifice a creature.
