Is Joyous Respite costed too aggressively to have a functional reprint? I don't get it!

Strictly worse than Joyous Respite.

R&D, if you read this, please reprint Toil to Renown (with the same art) instead of this in Magic 2013. My reasons include:
a) People will like it - better than this, at least. Some may argue that its flavor is not generic enough for a core set, but I think it fits well into the small elf tribal you include in every core set, reinforcing the pointy-eared people as green's iconic tribe. If it still doesn't fit, change the flavor text to some Greenpeace millitant talk from Llanowar Elf, who is surely being reprinted this year.
b) If one of the focuses of core sets is to teach new players, then toil is much more didactic. It can teach them various things, such as how to use your 2nd Main Phase (all while making them learn by practice that pure lifegain isn't as good as it seems).
c) Concerning limited, toil will be much more interesting. Bountiful Harvest sucks even there, and toil, while offering similar functionality in random green decks, al... (see all)

Wasn't there a 5-cost green lifegain sorcery back in Tempest that gave you 8 life? Nobody played that card, so why did they make a card that is almost strictly worse in every way and then reprint it?

these cards are objectively terrible but every time they come up in a limited game I'm supremely annoyed. amazing.

Reprinted in Magic 2013. Anyone who drafts Magic 2013 can look forward to picking up a few dozen of these as their 14th or 15th picks.

This is a bad card, although I don't know if it deserves the "less than one star" rating it has right now. At the end of the day, it's a Stream of Life variant that is much worse in the early game because you'll lack the mana to cast it, while being much better once you can cast it because it gains you life at a more efficient rate and never costs more than five mana. In most EDH decks running green, you can play this the turn after you play Boundless Realms for an easy 30-40 life, which is a lot of life for five mana. Sadly, no matter how you slice it, though, there are much better options out there for life gain, especially if you're willing to invest this much mana into it. Poor Bountiful Harvest.

The problem with comparing this card to Stream of Life (which sucks anyway) is that any deck that would actually cast that card is going to be using mana acceleration -- it is, after all, green. This card doesn't work with mana acceleration despite being in the mana acceleration color. It sucks.
Why on earth did they print it three times?
