The flavour text tells an entertaining little story.

The card stills sucks, though.

I believe even newest players heard or will soon hear about this cult creature - its name is often used as a measure for playability of creatures costing 3 mana in limited decks (regarding cost: power/toughness ratio - creatures of same size or bigger than 2/2 costing 3 mana are generally considered playable - though not exactly cool if they really are really Gray Ogres - and weaker creatures unplayable). See Grizzly Bears and Hill Giant for similar standards on creatures costing 2 and 4 mana.

Somehow the weaker cards don't make it up to meme status like Storm Crow...

Mindless Null isn't worse than Gray Ogre but worse than Scathe Zombies. The Zombies were never thought to be worse than the Ogre as they were zombies.

Then again there is something to be said about XC creature being a vanilla X/X.

Goblin Hero and Gray Ogre are pals. They now sit at the bar where they tell stories of how they used to be relevant.

Serra Angel is the bartender, while Sengir Vampire is the owner of the fine establishment. He usually has to kick Volcanic Dragon out every now and then.

Even when it was first published, this card was strictly weaker than not one but two other cards in the same set: Uthden and Sedge Troll (at the time, the tribes of all three were meaningless because they had no support, so it was literally strictly weaker -- not that they have much now.)

And Uthden Troll was just an uncommon. Seriously, what the heck?

I think that in the next core set, they should reprint this guy along with his new lord:

Gnerdal {2}{R}{R}
Legendary Creature- Ogre Shaman
Creatures named "Gray Ogre" get +5/+5 and gain trample.
3/3

this card owns (not power to mana ratio, just flavor).
there should be a functional reprint of this with protection from vampires

This card would be broken if they were to reprint it, having Mindless Null be the new norm.
