It's rather good in limited. Good blocker, and can take down your opponent's small creatures. Remember, your life total doesn't really matter as long as it's above 0.

I use this to pretty good effect in my Heartless Hidetsugu EDH deck. The whole point is to make sure your life is odd and the opponents is even, then double his damage. Every little bit helps!

Your totally correct. You can win with 1 life just as well as with 1,000 life
