The nice part is, that most cards say "target creature you control gains protection of a color of your choice". But this dude can give it to any creature. You can give an opponents creatures protection, to have aura's fall off or counter spells that would buff that creature or whatever. Or rescue your teammates creatures.
Shocking creatures is ok too.

You're wrong Test-Subject_217601.
Like majinara said protection removes equipped artifacts and auras.

If a creature gains protection, it doesn't effect auras/equips already equipped on them, however you could play it as a countermeasure so they don't power up their strong creatures.

Two points of damage to a creature aren't very relevant that late in the game, but that white ability is certainly interesting, because it allows you to counter spells targeting your creatures and to counter spells targeting ~enemy~ creatures! :) So yeah, Thousand-Year Elixir and two mana sources for white mana can make this creature protect itself as soon as it enters play..

The burn can be useful late game to remove utility creatures such as Dark Confidant for example. Can even be used to kill other Thornscape Masters! :O The protection is decent as well. You can keep him untapped to use his protection ability, and if it never comes up you can EOT burn something.
