Drugs are bad. Spectral Searchlight used to be hilarious because of mana burn, give an opponent mana on odd phases when they could only use instant speed responses or take 1. Or, add 1 of any color to your own pool, without life lost.

Why was this a rare? There's a precedent of cards just like this being uncommon (mana prism and celestial prism). A few years later Darksteel Ingot was common and it had the new indestructible ability. I could see myself being happy I opened this as my rare in an Invasion draft but not in any other situation.

Oh wow. Just got the point of this card, a good decade later. It's a Phyrexian lens because it allows you to pay Phyrexian mana at half the life cost. No matter the color. Bravo, Wizards, now that is some forethought.

This card is bad. It has no redeeming qualities. Spectral Searchlight can't mana burn people anymore, but atleast spectral searchlight doesn't deal damage to you. Spectral Searchlight also has some play value in multiplayer games.
