I haven't made a lot of red soldier decks, but this guy seems a little slow for something like Boros.

Crimson Mage is the new cheaper variant, although this fellow has the more useful type as a Soldier.

Not strictly better than Crimson Mage, but close. It is a Soldier, but let's not forget that it can kill those pesky Phantasmal Bears, unlike the guy who was in the set where it would've actually mattered. Probably would've made the Illusions too weak in Limited, though, but I digress.
