Cantrip discard doesn't look bad at first glance. Not that I played it, back in 1995... and I was hurting for playable cards back then.

I was always sort of bothered that it really looked like someone was unraveling a mind - well, a brain person, anyway. Now I've looked it up and found that "ravel" and "unravel" can be synonyms! Once again, Ice Age has taught me a new word (see also: "hyalopterous").

This card got a near-reprinting - changing it from slowtrip to cantrip - in Torment's Unhinge, and either could be played depending on whether having an empty hand is of value to you (hellbent, for example). While I wouldn't say that the card is flashy, there are precious few discard spells that are also cantrips - only Brainbite is a "true" cantrip, while Syphon Mind serves as a BAD Unhinge in a duel or as ridiculous card advantage in a multiplayer match.

I like this card. I'm seldom disappointed when it turns up in my hand. For one, it gives you card advantage. Your opponent loses a card but you don't because you're going to draw one shortly. Secondly, it helps you dig deeper into your deck, getting one step closer to the Rack that you're hoping to play next turn, now that your opponent has less than 3 cards in his/her hand. Also, it can be used in desperation, even if your opponent has no cards in hand, to draw a terror to use on your opponent's turn to get rid of the big fatty that's about to bash your head in. Hymn to Tourach, on the other hand, as broken as it is, will not help you in this situation. Apparently, there's an even better version of this card called Unhinge as mentioned below.
