It's not all about how close to the power zenith cards are on their own. There's also the matter of whether they fit in the deck's intended theme or not. If I remember correctly, this is in the Ceta deck--Riku's deck. Once the token is made, you have TWO 4/4 beasts that become 8/8 tramplers whenever you play a land. Pretty good deal for just an extra GU, especially if Animar's helping out. (Although...which creature WERE you thinking of that would be comparable, and last printed at uncommon, that would do better at being a trampler?)
Edit: I notice that you appreciate when old-border cards get new borders, so...Perhaps Brontotherium? If you don't mind the relatively low base toughness, anyway...

I don't really understand why they put cards like this in the decks.. Not that it's that bad or anything, but they could've reprinted something that actually deserved it.

I can't figure out whether or not to replace this with Terra Stomper. This runs the risk of being wimpy if I miss a land drop, but will occasionally hit 12/12 or even 16/16. And if I manage to land a Collective Voyage, BOOM! (especially if someone is foolish enough to join forces)
If I were making a competitive deck, I'd go for the more consistent Terra Stomper (though who actually plays Terra Stomper competitively?) in a heartbeat, but this is EDH!
Hmm... but is it fun enough to make up for being kinda bad?

You could make a deck that exploits the landfall ability, given the right cards - manaramp w/ lots of copies of Baloth Woodcrasher + Genesis Wave for a lot w/ Titanic Ultimatum or instead Brawn in your graveyard?
