@TimmyForever
The thing about Platinum Angel is that, not only is it subject to Artifact as well as Creature removal, but once it leaves, if you've been taking advantage of its ability at all, you're probably not doing so hot on the life total. Furthermore, top-decking an Angel when you have 2 life is nothing but a brief respite. I would much rather have the nice cushion of 7, and even more the 7/7 trampling body in what's probably a highly aggressive deck.
Angel still has its place, but this is far from useless in comparison.

Actually there are 8 7s on this card... The eighth 7 is on the bottom of the card. 167/249.
Pretty right after what happened with Griselbrand costing 8 mana.

Seven instances of the digit 7...
7 CMC = 8
7 lines of text = 9
7 in the collector number = 10
I'm counting ten instances of 7... any more? Ok...
If you wanna get real picky...
'Trample', 'becomes', 'reduces', and 'instead' are the seven letter words on the card.
For a grand total of 14 instances of '7'. TWO sets of seven for our friend here.
This card is AWESOME. (< another seven letter word. Perfect. <hey, another seven letter word. Wow. Rollin'.)

@MICKEY_KNOX
Basically, what MICKEY said was:
7 instances of the number 7 = 7
CMC=7 = 8
7 lines of text = 9
7 in the collector number = 10
"Trample", "becomes", "reduces", "instead" = 14
I think we can do a little better than that.
Artist's name: "Richard" = 15
"ELDERSCALEWURM" is fourteen letters = 17
Assuming the green things on the Wurm's head are ears, there are seven horns = 18
You wanna get really down and dirty?
Display rulings: four sevens: 22
All five extra rulings were put up in July: 27
The current rating for this card (definitely going to change soon): 3.972 = 28 sevens in all
Look at that. 28. Four more sevens, bringing the total up to 32, maybe?
If seven's the most powerfully magical number, then this card must be why the game's called Magic.
(that sentence has 77 letters. wat.)

So you're sit'n, clinging to you're life total keeps
While your useless mana just lay there in heaps
And on your side be some elderscale wurms
But shut your face 'cause here are my terms
By the end of the match that you think you've just won
Right when you think it is over and done
Scoop then for your own lost sake
YOU'RE ABOUT TO FEEL THE POWER OF THE WORLD WAKE!
To be quite honest I've not time for you
I need a quick break for some MT Dew
But I'll stick around
If I really must
Just to leave you there
Sitting in the dust.
Tap dem islands
Double boomerang
Matter-o-time till you go insane.
Don't worry, there ain't no hurt no pain
IT WON'T TAKE ME LONG TO ERASE YOUR BRAIN
Back in the good old days of the hood (no, literally, when I still wore a hood)
When Zendikar was misunderstood
Back when the hedrons fell from the sky
Mr. Ulamog told me to lay down and die
I told him "No sir this is goin' as planned"
Then I countered his face and I looked at his hand
I was Doin' so great, ripp... (see all)

@pallymander
There's no "Life Gain" at play here. Your life total becomes 7. Unless the text specifically says "you gain X life," Vortex's life gain effect does not apply. Likewise, the two damage tick won't take the enemy below 7 as long as the wurm remains in play, because no life gain is actually taking place there.
You can bypass the ability, as others have noted, with any card that has a "lose life" effect or its own "life total becomes X," effect, where X is less than seven. Vortex doesn't do either of those.
