I love how you can use his ability first turn to pump your other creatures. Give him haste somehow and you can easily win the game when he drops.

Compare with Sunhome Guildmage. 3x the mana cost, 2.5x the power, and 1/3 the full team firebreathing cost. Yes, this guy is a bit difficult to get out. Yes, the sunhome guildmage makes its own tokens. Yes, in order for the to be effective you have to have A LOT of guys out. Big deal. The sunhome guildmage has nothing on this from the team firebreathing cost alone. you can bump up your team more with the three red mana in casting him than you can with three red and three white on a sunhome. Efficiency. Doubling that, if I were to throw this thing into my Boros deck, I'd be pure hell to deal with later in the game. and I'm happy with that.

With Braid of Fire, Paradox Haze, and Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir on the field, flash this card in during your upkeep through the Braid, then in your next upkeep from Paradox Haze just blast your creatures' power through the roof. During combat, Overload a Weapon Surge and you just destroyed every creature on the field while your opponents writhe in misery.

Almost, almost strictly better than Shivan Dragon; the slightly different mana cost means that this guy will have to settle for "pretty much always better except in 3+ color decks".

I love using this beauty of a dragon with a field full of Talrand's tokens...

Now devotion is a thing, i wouldn't even call the colour heavy mana cost a drawback. Really fantastic.
