because it has 3 power it can trade with a lot of creatures in current standard + the life is an icing on the cake

Really solid card.
Look at it like blightning. It's an okay card if you take away the extra colour (white here, red from bligtning) and the life gain/damage, but when you add them, they become really strong.
This card is extremely good against aggro deck. You get a 3/3 blocker which can kill a lot of aggro creatures, and the life gain basically resets all the damage your opponent may have done.
My only gripe with this is that it kind of crapped on drafts by being too strong :P Good commons are always welcome though. I'm not a huge fan of draft anyway :P This card rocks in pauper and peasant.
