Well... the art's cool. And for the not-so-low cost of {3}{G}{R}{B} you can blow up an enchantment, make someone discard two cards AND get a 2/2 on top of it all.

The kickers could be done 'separately', so you don't always have to pay the hefty cost.

Since when are wizards allowed to wear plate armor? It interferes too much with spellcasting.
There was this one guy I played D+D with that tried to make a heavily armored wizard work, though...

Love the battlemages. But they are HARD to kick effectively.

@ SirMalkin AND ZEvilMustache:
Maybe the heavy combined cost of the kicker and mana cost mechanically simulates the rigors of trying to cast more complex spells while clad in plate armor. On top of that, really awesome art.

Probably my favorite 5-color cycle of all time, all of the battlemages have made it into some of my decks at one point or another. This one is my least favorite of the bunch but he's still not too shabby.
The art is fine on these, but I don't like the color cues. Oh, his axes are black and green! Ooooooh! That totally explains his abilities.

Second cheapest kickers of the Battlemages and the effects are still very useful. Definitely the best art of the set.

@SirMalkin
You shouldn't assume that Magic the Gathering has to obey DnD rules. Maybe this guy's magic can be cast with heavy armor on. It could very well be that simple.
