This has great potential for Limited, but that's about it.

If it isn't countered, you are pretty much guaranteed to get value out of it. Nice.

Blind hunter will always be preferred by me, although the fact that this doesn't need white makes it so the choice isn't as clear cut. Basically, if you are running B/W, use Blind hunter. Black only, use this i suppose.

I remember when highway robber was a great card...

Unless you need Human, Rogue or Mercenary for your creature types you should always choose this over Highway Robber.

It's okay Blind Hunter, I still love you. Others may not appreciate you, but you'll always be my #1 Bat.

Blind Hunter versus this is an unfair comparison as the former had the possibility of garnering up to 4 damage/4 life, as well as a decent Flyer. Seemingly a small difference, it's still the difference between playable and unplayable. Also, as Blind Hunter shared two colors, he had a home in the Nightsky Mimic deck. You'll take this card in Limited because every little bit of damage helps--but nowhere else.

If this were a {1}{B} Flying, 1/1 with When Bloodhunter Bat enters the battlefield, target player loses 2 life and you gain 2 life I'm sure it would see tons more play.
Well with Heartless Summoning now you can!

There are now quite a number of creatures with this effect. Fits perfectly in a casual deck where every card you play makes your opponent lose a bit of life while you gain some.
Blood artist & friends
Dakmor Ghoul
Highway robber
Polluted bonds
