It can survive an attack from both Serra Angel and Sengir Vampire. but will die to Lightning Bolt. Not better than Giant Spider, but arguably not worse either. They're just applicable in different situations.

Why ask whether it's better than Giant Spider? Run both.
They're even in different spots on the mana curve.
Cast one, then the other.

As Sir Zapdos said, it's different than the Giant, not better or worse.
I do run both, two of each (well, two of these and two giant mantises, but that's cause I like mantids).

Still good, and happily blocks that Sengir Vampire your foe Dark Ritualled into on turn three.
4/5.

This is one of the cheapest, best green reach critters out there even for today.

But it's so much worse that Giant Spider. I'm sorry but 3 toughness doesn't work.

This is almost exclusively better when trying to block flyers, which makes me happy to have the choice of attacking, but I'd rather have an actual defender in place for the CMC. Wall of Denial? Even Wall of Blossoms should be better for most games...still unboltable, but replaces itself. Of course, this does trade with something...
