I understand what the gruesome discovery is when a creature died ("Gasp! The Fog Bank cleared up!"), but what exactly is rattling the player when everyone's fine?

Well, it's free of the "nonland" restriction that haunts so many discard spells in Standard right now... that at least makes it worth a second look, doesn't it?

Fits in the mana curve with Duress, Hymn to Tourach, and Mind Rot...only if you don't want its morbid effect to occur, of course. Then Mindstab Thrull would be a better choice than Mind Rot.

You aren't making them discard as early, but the things you get will probably end the game.*
*(unless they already dumped their hand on the board)

Gotta love good discard spells.
Hint: Make them discard their lands!

Better than Noggin Whack- you get to see their whole hand with this one.
