A 2/2 with flash for two mana is pretty solid. It's been supposedly proven that two mana for a counterspell is too good. Put them together, and how could that possibly be bad?
Maybe he's not "gud enuf" at four mana, but he was often a free 2/2 counterspell in tandem with Hunting Grounds.

A powerful card, with... intangible flavor. How does the snake counter the spell? Because he's... mystic?

@Saigmundur
If it didn't have flash, the card wouldn't make sense.

Put this together with things like Momentary Blink and Chord of Calling, and it suddenly looks even better.

I think that some people don't quite understand the card. The 2/2 body by itself is not what matters. What matters is that it's a creature at all. Which means it can be easily reanimated, bounced to hand and replayed, flickered in and out of play and so on. Or, to put it into other words: it's not only a hard counter. It can not only kill players, creatures, planeswalkers and protect you. It can also lock down an opponent easily with lots of combos. And it is pure card advantage. Combine all that with a very powerful color combination and give it a fine mana cost, and you have an awesome card.
So if you complain about it only beeing 2/2, then you didn't understand it. :) And you never played against an opponent who really used this card.

He bites the spell. Pretty obvious. Or maybe it's just hard to concentrate with a huge snake behind you.

If it didn't have flash, it would be utterly pointless to play. You would HAVE to cheat it into play to get any kind of effect, and then yeah. just play better cards if you're going to build around them.
