Sometimes all you need is a sacrifice outlet that is cheap and reliable. This card is excellent for that. Good against a sweeper, great with Ray of Command, Reins of Power and similar cards. Also great with creatures that do awesome things upon dying, like Archon Of Justice and False Prophet.
It's not the best card in the world, but in the right deck this card can be an essential cornerstone. Plus, this low-profile artifact can outright kill your opponents amazingly well if the game runs long.

This card works wonders in Modular decks. Of course, it is no Arcbound Ravager, but it does the job. I guess you could call it the "poor man's Arcbound Ravager", but with the added bonus of softening the blow of board sweep spells.

I love that guy in the center of the art. He looks like he was just taking a dip in the Pool, and is chilling in the midst of the decomposing and recompiling horrors.

The effect is really handsome, getting rid of your creatures was never easier, while still getting a bunch of cheap 2/2 artifact creatures.
On top of that, it uses generic charge counters, which can be added by a bunch of cards like Energy Chamber or Power Conduit.
But gosh, what's up with the creature type...a Spawn? why not simply an Insect named Spawn or something? I'm wondering why this didn't get changed with the Grand Creature Type Update back then...

gotta love alternatives to scooping all your creatures to wrath-clearing spells

I know Doubling Season pretty much breaks every card out there, but I'm surprised nobody's mentioned it here.
Sac a creature, get two counters on Spawning Pit. Pay the one mana and remove those counters, get two tokens. Repeat for as much mana as you have available.
Hell, you could even add in Ashnod's Altar and go completely infinite with the combo.
Just a thought.
