This takes out more creatures then shock, and it hits your opponent that much harder.

The power level of creatures with 3 toughness is frequently so far above the power level of creatures with 2 or 1 toughness, if you say "it's only a little bit better than shock", that's the understatement of the century.

Simple, elegant, powerful. Favourite of every red mage, me included:))

To Hydrogoose: Lighting Bolt is way better. I would never play spark spray even if I could need that card draw.
the Bolt just gives you that littlebit extra power to solve problems like stablestag or rafiq of the many. and besides it is always a good feeling with one red mana left to know on the turn of your opponent, that come what may you have that Lighting Bolt on your hand.

what a wonderful and elegant card. It is an interesting exercise to consider what changes would need to be made to the power level of magic, or it's rules, to make this card a legal staple again.

I collect this card. So far, 4 mint revised, 4 heavily played 4th Ed, 1 Korean bb 4th Ed, and a t.Chinese bb 4th Ed. Still need a Japanese and a s.Chinese to round out my bb asian guanlet. Also Alpha and Beta would be nice...but I've never even seen one before.

it's only a little bit better than shock. and a tiny bit better than spark spray (you have to remember that spark spray has the cycling ability, whereas lightning bolt will never draw you cards)

One and a half shocks. Still the king of burn and lets hope they never make the mistake of one-upping it.
