Underrated card advantage engine. If many of your cards gain you some sort of life, you can use it to draw cards in colors that don't normally have means, such as white and/or green. Great with lifelink and old lifelink (i.e. the one that stacks)

I have no problems drawing in my green deck without this.
The life loss is not the problem here, but it doesn't help. the original six mana will eat your turn, then its another six mana to draw some cards. Necro was broken because of the lack of a mana cost.
For edh, I'd use Seer's Sundial, Urza's blueprints, hell, i'd even use good old Jayemdae Tome though that one just for nostalgia.

Obscure reference to The Gathering Dark:
This was the book that tried to eat Jodah's hand- the cover fits the same de***ion.
End of obscure reference.

You can't compare this to Necropotence. A: because its not black. B: because Necro is broken. Thats like comparing Phyrexian Arena to Wheel Of Fortune. Have to have some perspective. This is very similar to Greed anyway and is colorless, which is awesome to use as a duplicate card drawer in EDH or in a White, Red, or Green deck.

trumped by necropentence. it cost half as much to play (wich being colored in my opinoin means it has the same) but the ability costs 1 less life and no mana.
And green has a much better draw engine for 6, recycle, red has brow beat, and white... well... good point on white, but there are better colorless draw cards too.
