Sounds like a good card for an Emperor game, otherwise it might work good with buyback spells.

It was an oppurtunistic card that worked within the confines of the oddessey mechanics.
as with Muscle burst and Diligent Farmhandfor example, it encouraged use of such cards and rewarded the player for it, outside the expansion and several years on people fail to see why this card is a gold.

With the release of M14 and its shadowborn apostle, this card will be an absolute house in my 5-colour shadowborn apostle EDH deck.
The deck is basically a silly combo deck, and I was worried about dying to early aggression. This card will pretty much make me invincible. Nantuko srhine is an epic alternate win condition.

oof... The shrines were an interesting idea, but before the existence of "You may have as many of these cards in your deck" spells (Relentless Rats/Shadowborn Apostle), I think they were even worse than they are now.
If you're playing a 60-card format, both you and your opponent have equal ability to benefit from this. And you're the one who spent 3 mana playing this. They can gain more life than you if they're given a better situation. Sorry Undermine, but that's what you call adding insult to the injury.
Besides, unlike Nantuko Shrine or Dwarven Shrine, gaining 1 or 2 life isn't very game-changing.
