Here's the math for you.
0 mana- 2/7
1 mana- 3/5
2 mana- 4/3
3 mana- 5/1
To start, a 2/7 for 5 CMC isn't really worthwhile, and while it's ability makes it a little more versatile, it's just not very exciting. I'd rather start with a 5/1 for 5 mana that get's -1/+2 for 
, rather than vice versa.
There's better treefolk out there, and better green creatures in general.

Although there are much better treefolk available, at the time there was something fairly exciting about a creature with 7 toughness, especially a treefolk which was far from a tribe at that point.
It's a very likeable card I think. Not a good one, but I would use it in some Doran Commander deck.
