Uhhhhh... MCKEY.KNOX what makes you think they can't Shock the creature in response? Shock would go on the stack and resolve before the trigger. Once the trigger resolves, if any cards are in the opponent's hands, they would then discard one.

@groovepooper: Your opponent can not target a creature with such a spell as Shock until it has entered the battlefield. Since the rats have to hit the battlefield before they can be zapped, I believe your opponent would still have to discard.

Yes they still have to discard. Same with Rotting Rats. If the Shock was their only card in hand, they could throw it at your face in response, but they can't fry the rats in response cuz it would be discarded.

This card actually is better than it looks. A creature and discard in one. It gets card advantage and furthers your board position. For a common that is great.
