One of the original "187" creatures that still sees some play today. A great lesson to new players about card advantage, and the fact that he has First Strike (a fairly rare ability in Black) makes him not completely useless once on the board. Dragon Mask was also in this set, which had great recursion synergy with Nekrataal (as well as Man-o-War and Uktabi Orangutan).

Fun fact: a Nekrataal was orignally supposed to be a type of Efreet, but they just changed it to a Human when it was reprinted.

I like your comment Equinox523. I love the "Gather" and I really value reading other user's comments, and you have a good one.
As for the card, I absolutely love it. This version has my favorite art. I love card advantage and I love black cards, this card finds his way into many of my black decks.

Or so the joke used to be amongst most of players I encountered upon seeing this guy. You know, back toward the turn of the century when this guy actually saw play. Still a welcome addition to any mono-black EDH deck.
This guy was card advantage enough without the prospect of someone continuously reviving him from the graveyard, or bouncing him to your hand and recasting. Either way there were many terror-beetles to be had.
