These ratings are getting far too harsh.
What we have here is essentially not too different a Shivan Dragon with the flying swapped for a play based burn ability, and a slightly smaller body. It also picks up a defensive firebreathing ablity, although not quite as good as firebreathing it certainly has its uses in combat.
I guess people have been spoiled with titans which imo should never have been printed.
This is good, very good.

this card begs for Preeminent Captain to get him into play in the early game. to be honest i do not see why folks frown so much on this card. for a soldier deck, this guy is very solid.

Despite how expensive he is to play, this card is pretty solid. It has a large amount of abilities combined into one card. It has an enter the battlefield effect that can smack someone in the face. It has firebreathing, which --@Purplerooster--he is spitting fire, and a defensive pump as well, useful if needed to survive a more powerful defender, or to become one himself. This card is pretty solid, and though it has not much use in standard--agro and esper control dominate so far--it has its uses in an EDH deck.

Good card for limited, meh in other places. I'm still a little disappointed that he's the prerelease promo instead of Firemane Avenger, but that would have been really stupid.

A general is nothing without its army, I see. Even with the pumping abilities the Champion is still not powerful enough for its cost.

I don't understand why he has firebreathing. The art doesn't suggest it at all.

If he was 5 mana, I'd be more tempted to play him, but even then I'd have a hard time building a case for him.
Even though he did quite well in limited and was usually a two-for-one that subsequently won the game, I much prefer flametongue kavu since it deals 4 damage more reliably and is only 4 mana.
Not a terrible card, and his assistance was much appreciated as the promo card for Boros, but if I'm going to try and build a deck with tons of little creatures, I'd prefer a copy of Massive Raid first.
