Lovely reprint. While not a very strong card by itself, it will give great value in the right deck. Aim it at a low toughness value creature, and you will almost always have an instant speed 1/5 cost Lava Axe. Then Bolt/shock/geistflame the creature afterwards.

Always run next to other burn. This either becomes Lightning bolt 5-8 or it grants tremendous tempo advantage in a burn deck. It's weakest attribute is that it requires an opponent's creature to cast it on, meaning it is occasionally a dead card. I love casting it on 4 toughness creatures when other burn is at the ready, because even though it's card disadvantage, it is often enough to threaten their win con and they'll eat 5.
Also runs well with Vexing Devil simply because one devil, bolt, salvo = 60% of their health. Probably run near staggershock. 5 of those in any combination will ruin an opponent by t3-t4. No god draws. Just 5 non-lands and 3 lands.

Technically it isn't strictly worse than Lightning Bolt, even though it is worse most of the time. Of course even comparing well to Lightning Bolt is impressive, considering its indefinite and likely eternal reign as the king of one mana, instant speed burn spells.

Great for Mind games. Say you are running a red/green deck, and your opponent has a 3/3 flyer with a cool ability, and a 4/5. Use this to target his 3/3, and when he takes the 5 play Clan Defiance with X=5 kill all his creatures and he takes another 5 damage.
Blazing Salvo:
Clan Defiance: 5
***ed off opponent: priceless

I'll say it again and again for people who like to hate "punisher" cards and trot out the "Your opponent will always pick what's better for them!" line:
Your opponent won't always KNOW what's better for them. They (usually) don't know exactly what's in your hand, in the rest of your library, and (most importantly) what you've got planned for them in your head.
Also, lots of players (even the sharpest cats in competitive play) will sometimes make an irrational choice.
YES, you *DO* need to build around a punisher strategy a bit.
YES, Blazing Salvo is not an auto 4-of in every burn deck.
I really hope this gets reprinted in some set that will be legal in modern.

Imagine if Wizards printed a card exactly like Lightning Bolt except it couldn't target players. This community would probably give it a 2.5 star rating. Luckily Blazing Salvo is better than that imaginary card, right?
