Expensive to cast, but frightening as an uncommon.

Split second and Instant speed are not the same thing, are not mutually exclusive, and are not really comparable. Split second simply can't be responded to, ensuring that the spell will resolve.
This is a very significant way to steal a planeswalker though. You gain priority after the stack empties and can activate a planeswalker ability before anyone has a chance to remove Take Posession or the 'walker. This lets you steal a 'walker ready to pop its ult and use it right away without your opponent having a chance to stop you; unless they're running Trickbind or Voidslime.

"Instant Speed Planeswalker Theft? Yeah that's worth 7 mana.
Instant Speed Creature Theft? If it's a gamewinning Creature like Griselbrand or Blightsteel, sure. I'd pay 7 for that too.
Instant Speed Artifact Theft? I'd be wary about which cards I'd take. (...)

True. I'd even suggest to add another equation:

Split second >= Instant speed.

Being able to steal Absolutely Anything and get away with it?

This could be a Rare in Duel Decks: Carmen Sandiego versus Batman. ^_^

It's kinda weird this art - it's a Lorwyn Elf, but that's definitely not Shadowmoor in the background of the right side. Seems more like he was stolen and thrown into the post-apocalyptic Dominaria.

@garganeraboy

Once Take Possession is in play it no longer has Split Second (as it is not a "spell" on the stack) and you can Stifle/Trickbind/Voidslime the trigger to attach Take Possession to a permanent.
