This is actually probably worse than Dragon's Claw.

Dragon's claw you could sideboard in against red decks, like burn. It would be enough life to last you a couple turns longer, at most. This thing is not only more expensive but only triggers off of your red spells, so it's completely useless unless you play red yourself. And if you're playing red, why do you need life?

Maybe with Koth and Valkut in constructed. Ok I am trying wayyy to hard to defend this it is awful, worst of the cycle because it is futile unlike the others (W: life gain B: Swamp love + Lifegain U:Anything for stall G: loves land I can't think of one off the top of my head but I am certain there is one.) in limited which is all that matters for awful cards like this.

When I play red I want to burninate my opponent, or overrun him with goblins or other cheap effective creatures. Playing this thing will result in nothing but giving my opponent time to find some sort of defense.

Spending a card and mana for only life is not so good, even more so when the investment is little and over time.

Possibly in a monored control build?

Judging from the magma flow on it, that thing looks painful to hold.

Gatherer works better in the Companion app!
