While it's not the most cost-effective creature, this is still a perfect EDH card. It allows you to gain multiple effects with one card, and in EDH, every card you play should have more than just one effect.

For example, most people wouldn't play Terra Stomper in EDH. Why, though? It's cost-effective, and it's hard to deal with. However, it is just a big creature. It doesn't provide a solution to much other than attacking and blocking power. As some of you may know, EDH is not a game determined only by combat.

So if people wanted to play a big creature, they'd play Pelakka Wurm or Terastodon. They are a big blocker/attacker AND have another ability/ies. They provide more than just board presence.

The Battlemages are a great cycle of creatures that any beginner/discount EDH builder should get. They provide a decent amount of abilities that generally provide more than just a creature. However, once you begin to invest a f... (see all)

Hmm. Let's see here. I don't know if I've ever seen an and/or kicker before. If you pay 4WBU you get a little 2/2 chump-blocker, a Healing Salve, and a Doom Blade. I hear people have a lot of excess mana in Commander but still, I'm not entirely sure this is going to make the cut.

Utility is nice, but eeeh. In EDH, 3 life is pilfering, and burying a single nonblack creature for 2B is kinda lame.

At least it can chump, eh?

Versatile card advantage, that still manages to be wayyy too weak to consider. Lifegain here is really irrelevant, the body is irrelevant, and if you want that 2-for-1, you're better off with shriekmaw and friends. Really, really bad.

2/2 for 3 sucks.
2/2 for 4 and 3 life sucks.
2/2 for 6 and destroy a target sucks, but at least you get removal.
2/2 for 7 and destroy a target + 3 life sucks, but at least you get removal.

Welcome to power creep. If it shaved 2 off the black bit, it would be a decent card.
