I pulled this out of my very first starter deck, as a total Magic noob, reading this and thinking "WTF?"

The Oracle text is much more clear.

For more retroactive shenanigans see Reverse Polarity and Eye for an Eye, the latter of which doesn't actually say retroactively but was ment to be played after a spell had dealt you damage.
