I prefer to use Contaminated Ground. It doesn't necessarily deal the damage, but it almost neutralizes their land of their own accord, and it works well with swampwalk.

@ Duddits
I don't understand why it would mater if the upkeep had happened or not, if he has the mana to use the activated ability of circle of protection: black then the damage would be prevented simple as that.
Just keep in mind that if this card had said you lose 1 life instead of dealing one damage that would not have been preventable.

Since rulings are disabled, I'll have to ask my question here:
I was playing a game against my neighbor. He thought he should be able to use "Circle of Protection: Black" to counter this card's effect. He based his argument on the text reading "During the upkeep...", rather than "At the beginning of upkeep".
Thoughts?

More satisfying when played immediatley after the other player has used up their last Disenchant.

For {4} I want something more than a conditional 1 damage per turn, not to mention the card will be nullified it the land leaves play via something like Devastating Summons..

1 damage a turn? There are many other ways to do that for less than 4 mana.
