This is funny-you see, the land was either a forest or an island, and the evil presence is leeching the good mana an replacing it with pure death.

Mana denial for multicolored decks. I'm thinking they wanted something less powerful than Sinkhole in the base set.

Keep in mind that swampwalk used to be a fairly common ability. In some casual decks, this card used to be half your creatures are unblockable for the rest of the game.
