Paying life to tap for mana? Should have been both red and green mana at the same time or something.

For the times when you need it, one mana of the right color is worth WAY more than one life.

It seems that 2-mana artifact is the equivalent of a land. Guardian Idol fits the same pattern, but is weaker than Mishra's Factory. This can probably be excused by the fact that the Factory is pretty damn strong.
