The quote is from Histories by Herodotus, but not necessarily true history. Much of his information, particularly regarding battles, came from what he was told by others. Not always reliable. He has been called the "Father of Lies" in addition to the "Father of History".

No, this quote is from history. Both the card and the movie used it.

As for the card itself, it's a youthful knight for green, good because green lacks first strike.

The movie 300 was based on the Battle of Thermopylae.
This card's flavor text is referencing a quote made during that battle.
The battle happened over 2,000 years before MTG came out.

The "fighting in the shade" quote is also used in Myth: The Fallen Lords. Its in the one of the flavour texts of either the Soulless or Berserk units...
