What's interesting is that since they changed it to an Instant, counter-wars are impossible if playing Portal Block since there's no card available to counter Mystic Denial.

I really wish Wizards hadn't changed the text of the card to "COUNTER target...". This spell would've at least had it uses if it were able to toss "uncounterable" creatures and sorceries into the graveyard. Unfortunately it's now just a horrible "Counterspell" and (as everyone else has been mentioning) a bad "Cancel". :(

sorcery portal cards are strange anyways since they replace all instants with an accordant further de***ion, and "countering spells" was also paraphrased quite explicatory.

IMHO it is an error in the Oracle wording that this cannot counter other Mystic Denials, because that is strict diminishing of the original functionality.
