half a flametongue kavu for 1 less mana, could replace sparkmage apprentice in a core set.

This card is seriously underrated. It's a Goblin Piker for one extra mana that Shocks a creature when it enters the battlefield. How can this not be good?

Portal was a weak set (it's a starter set, so I'm not complaining), but there were exceptions (e.g. Breath of Life, Jungle Lion). This one is sort of an exception. It's not awesome (Flametongue Kavu is more than worth the one extra mana), but very playable compared to most Portal cards.

Heheheh. I just couldn't help but get in on the fun. Why should just R&D people be able to comment on cards.
Guess what. The very first Magic cards I ever owned were from Portal. And this guy was in my very first booster pack. I've made a lot of use of him since then, and he's found his way into my budget cube.
This is one of the guys that taught me about card advantage. At first, he seemed mediocre to me, since he just had a 2/1 body. But eventually I saw how powerful a free 2 damage could be, especially in the Portal set. This was a game changing card to drop on turn 3.
I think this is a creature that actually holds up well according to modern design sensibilities. I wonder if it would be updated to have a may ability now, or if it would be left as is. In any case, it would be a rock solid limited card.
I always loved the flavor of this guy that jumped onto the field and burned another creature away, but then he ran out of fire and just si... (see all)

This is actually a decent creature from Portal - oddly enough this is arguably more powerful than its mainstream counterpart Ghitu Slinger. I would not be surprised if this made it into a core set someday.
