Not as good as it looks, since it only targets creatures that arent' black, and only kills "bolt bait." Still pretty decent though, in the right deck.

With the advent of dredge, things like this can help you push through for the last few points of damage for free. Very useful.

Like Vendetta, the nonblack clause really hurts this. Of course, this gains you life, costs 0 mana, but only kills bolt range creatures.

this is like specifically tailored for a pox deck..
most pox decks are designed to operate on few lands, and as HairlessThoctar stated; alternate costs are always good..in this case, its almost always free because your yard fills up quite quickly in a pox deck..
most pox decks run 1-2 copies of nether spirits..this can help you manage your graveyard in case you get stuck with 2 of them in there..
helps protect against burn decks..
but like contagion, this card is underrated..
EDIT:
after reading up on spinning darkness' rulings, at least 2 copies of this are now going maindeck..so you remove the top 3 black cards, not the top 3 cards if they're black. basically, you go to the graveyard and look at the top cards. if it's black, remove it from the game, if not, keep going down, until you've removed 3 black cards this way. then you can pay for Spinning Darkness' alternative cost.

This card just works so nicely in a suicide Necropotence deck. Paying life for cards lets you easily pitch stuff for free Unmasks and Contagions. As your graveyard fills up, of course, that means a free Spinning Darkness can remove some unwanted creature while giving you more life for card drawing. With all that zero-mana removal and disruption, you might as well be playing your win conditions in a solitaire game.
