Rancor before Rancor existed.
Briar Shield sees play in 10Land Green decks. It can get 4 or 5 damage in for the lowly investment of 
, which is a fairly safe investment on a troll shrouded creature (Silhana Ledgewalker, Slippery Bogle). For an aura, from Mirage Block, 4/5 easily.

A suicide giant growth. sure, can't cast it instantly, but the fact it gives +1/+1 before suicide is quite good.
still, not as good as rancor.

Comes in handy as essentially a sorcery-speed Giant Growth, though I'd say growth is better, as an instant. But this can also give the handy +1/+1 that stays.
