Ancestral Recall and Gush may give you card advantage, it but Gifts Ungiven wins the game.
Blue control was so dominnat because mana drain decks counter a juicy target, and use this and Gifts as a mana sink.

in spite of JL_Weber's excellent point, it still gets limited because it searches for Gush (Essentialy 1B for 2 cards) and Ancestral Recall (1BB for 3 cards)

If not for those cards, Merchant scroll would be exactly what it seems, a "Meh" tutor.

I know this should be considered worse than Mystical Tutor, but getting it into your hand is a huge bonus... enough to justify the extra mana I think, and almost enough to make up for not being able to hit sorceries.

Very much a card for a combo deck. It lets one search for their combo pieces, or for protection for it. It could be used in a control deck, however in those it's just for the most part a worse brainstorm, or a ponder, or a worse mystical teachings. However in a combo deck it's amazing, it lets one search for things such as pact of negation, for those hive mind decks, or for high tide, or meditate or w/e. Again in a straight up control deck it's terrible, for that matter most tutors are pretty bad in control decks, unless you're running a tutor board, where one sides in a thing such as enlightened tutor and other random hosers.

But searching for burn with this is terrible, yay you're paying 5 mana to do 2 damage and draw a card, seems good, burn is only good when it's efficient, and having to tutor for it to use it is terrible.

It's restricted because of it getting Flash (in Hulk Flash decks) or Gush (in Fastbond-Gush).

That's be nice, but it's only blue instants D:

I'm not sure if JL_Weber is serious or just a total moron. If he's just being sarcastic then he's awesome however.

This card is making me second guess the mystical tutors I've been using in casual. The lack of card-disadvantage; the fact I'm always searching for either High Tide, Frantic Search, or Snap; and the fact that this isn't vulnerable to milling might make up for it being a sorcery instead. Mystical Tutor HAS to be instant to be worth anything at all as otherwise milling strategies, even terrible ones, could easily counter it.

I didn't realize lightning bolt was blue...

If you're ahead and want to lock your opponent out of the game, simply get one of your Cryptic Commands or whatever and stay ahead. I could write on for an hour about the potential targets for this, but I'll just settle with counterspells off my head. Also note that it doesn't just search mono colored spells, so you can also go and get Slave of Bolas or Conflux if that's what you need.
