This is more splashable. But I'm just happy that this many cards with similar effects exist for commander.

Pillage was just... better? More playable? Can this have a hair more oomph?

Too much... if it was instant speed, then maybe. As is though, {3} {R} is too much. As ZEvilMustache mentioned, Pillage is generally better, although Demolish is more splashable.
