Definitely agree with Sarroth. The flavour behind these little trinkets is kind of neat, but they are unfortunately bad. MaRo has cited this cycle (see also Wooden Sphere,Crystal Rod, Throne of Bone and Ivory Cup) as examples of cards that are supposed to teach newer players about overvaluing certain mechanics. Gaining life seems like it is never a bad thing, and adding a little zing to each spell you cast is appealing...
Still, though, if it means that you're waiting an extra turn to cast your things just so that you can gain 1 life, it slows your game badly while offering a comparatively poor reward. To realize this, you're really getting out of the spirit of the game and starting to think about its economy/mechanics... heady stuff for new players to realize on their own!

You can only use it's affect once per spell, if you were implying something else.

tommybthe1: trigger: "Whenever a player casts a red spell", cost: "Pay 1 mana", effect: "Gain 1 life." You can't have multiple effects from one trigger.

Leshrac: Well, given that this lot was from Alpha, I doubt they were designed with that intent in mind. (Does anyone seriously think Spike was known at ALL when the game was first broached?)

If I'm playing Red, I will NOT being wasting good mana on life gain, I'll be using it on Shocks or Lightning Bolts to fry whatever idiot thought a Red deck wanted 1 mana 1 life gain at the cost of said Shocks and Lightning Bolts!

SilverSkyz, yes that is how it DOES work, but it inspires me for an idea on how to improve it:
How about 'Mulitkicker' Charms? :) Charms just like this that you can activate as many times per spell as you want! :)

It might be only 1 mana, but with the pay 1 necessity you'd be better off getting Dragon's Claw.

People are deeply confused from the text of these type of cards. Make no mistake about it, Iron Star allows you to rip ALL the rest of your open land for one life each EVERY time a red spell is played. That is why it is uncommon.
