I wouldn't say it's "so MUCH better" than Altar Golem. While it is true that this doesn't have that annoying drawback of it not untapping unless you untap 5 other creatures, Altar Golem has trample. So if you make 10 Sapprolings, it's no big deal and you get trample.

I guess though, if you were already running green, you could just give this guy trample, or use overrun, but Altar Golem lets you do it without the need of extra cards. It's situational really.
