I'm going to guess that the low ratings are on account of black usually wanting to pull its dead creatures back for more, rather can consume several to take down just one foe...

Yes, I would as-sume you are correct. Also for larger creatures you may not even have enough creature cards in your graveyard to make this a kill.
Really just seems like a bad set to have this card in since this was really the first block (Onslaught) to bring about a strong zombie tribal theme.

When you play this, say "Chill out, man!"

Would be a lot better if it just said "cards" rather than creatures.
Still, this is versatile.

Ahhh, so this is where they got the Harvest Pyre idea from. While this is technically more powerful, Harvest Pyre is in Red, who cares far less about it's graveyard so it was a nice idea.

Even bad removal is good.
I'd gladly play this card in a black limited deck.

It's mostly for the fact that of all colours, black usually shouldn't have a hard time removing creatures. There are just so many better options.

What a waste of graveyard creatures. You have to burn x3 valuable resources just to make this a tad stronger then disfigure.
