Artifact creatures beyond 1/1 are NEVER X for X/X. Combined with an excellent ability that allows you to "float" mana makes this an extremely useful card.
Example for green: attack third turn, let it die, then play something with CMC 6(+) on your second main phase. A discerning opponent would choose to lose a creature or take 3.

Unfair in a blue deck. This is now a 3/3 for 3 that not only has no drawback with the removal of mana burn but has the possibility of charging a counterspell.

because mana drops during phases, this guy is pretty hard to take advantage of without a sac-engine.

Another fun infinity combo is Cathodion + Enduring renewal + throne of geth + Dross Scorpion + something with counters - say Hankyu or Golem foundry

Cathodion + Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle gives you infinite colorless mana... alternatively Composite Golem + Nim Deathmantle gives you infinite mana of any color (and all colors really)
