Many cards from around this era reading "target opponent" were reworded to work with all opponents (eg. Aura of Silence, Reparations). This card would have been a lot better if it had recieved the same treatment.

I got one of these at the Tempest pre-release and played with it, often using the Excavator to make it unblockable. Most responses to an attack would end up buffing it, which really made combat interesting for my opponent. The combo was also a bit of a deterrent to my opponent playing anything really expensive on his or her own turns. All that combined with cool artwork by old-school Magic artist Quinton Hoover made this card a favorite.

Most of the time this will be at least a 3/3 when attacking, and it tends to get better late game, so that's a pretty good deal for 3 mana. The main drawback is that it's virtually useless as a blocker, but if you're using red creatures to block, you're doing it wrong.
