Back in Kamigawa, this thing hit like half the creatures you'd see, many of which had graveyard based abilties. OK in limited, if nowhere else.

My inner Johnny wants to find some way of giving a creature changeling and killing them with this... Dunno how that'll work efficently though...

Perhaps with Prototype Portal I could get enough copies out to annihilate any creature, hehehe.

On the plus side, it really hampers Kokusho and friends.

@pumaman83 This card is not useless 99.9% of the time. In limited, regardless of whether it is a "soulshift" deck, it is good against all spirits, which is half of the creatures. Also now with Inninstrad block you have Spirits making a comeback. Also @SirZapados hits the nail on the head when he states how to properly combo this card. Which makes it handy if not useful.

Also, as far as comparison to Rod of Ruin, yeah Rod of Ruin is better as a stand alone card, but mix it in with creature type changing cards like Imagecrafter, Unnatural Selection, Mistform Mutant, Wings of Velis Vel, or Trickery Charm. Unfortunately they are all blue.

And before anyone states the obvious arguement of when you combo most cards they become better. I know that, but many cards are rated the way they are, not because of their stand alone value, but because of their combo value.

I ... (see all)

Would this have been too good if it hit any target creature? I tend to think not.

Well, it's not quite as narrow as Great Wall...

Anyone who thinks this is useless has never played against a well built soulshift deck. This card prevented people from using creatures with soulshift from working the way spirit decks work, which really hurts them. This is nowhere near as bad as Rod of Ruin.

This just doesn't deserve to be uncommon. Even in kamigawa block, it is too costly for an artifact that does something this specific.

But it HAS to be an uncommon! Because it's so uncommon for an artifact to be this s***ty!
Seriously though, what the hell were they thinking? This is worse than Rod of Ruin, and that says a lot about its playability.

OpenSeasonNoobs pegs this card's problem while trying to defend it. The only time this card is EVER even a little bit useful is against "a well built soulshift deck". That means this is a card that is worthless 99.9% of the time but may slightly disrupt that one guy somewhere that has a decent soulshift deck.

Thus the ever crappy Rod of Ruin really is better because it is more useful against every deck other than that "well built soulshift deck"
