I like how this Portal rare is randomly reprinted in a artifact themed expansion which cares about using all colors of mana.

I agree, it makes more sense as an uncommon.
Art is epic, though.

Should've kept the Portal art... ha, yes I'm kidding.

I like how this portal rare was reprinted as a RARE.

This was probably sitting in the "Filler Card" file since Portal. While I'm a bit surprised they put it in Fifth Dawn rather than as the usual Core Set reprint, it isn't exactly out of place. Mirrodin does have the Great Furnace and plenty of flame based monsters (Spark Elemental, Chancellor of the Forge, Furnace Scamp) that pour out of it.

This is a fine card. Unlike Bloodfire Colossus that requires you to sacrifice it for it's Area of Effect ability, it comes in and does it's job, not killing itself in the process.

Jaya Ballard, does the same, but she has many other abilities, and can be used as general in EDH.

Anyway, in conclusion, it isn't that bad. It's just really, REALLY mediocre.

If you've got a Ruby Medallion or something else that knocks that cost down one or two, very solid.

Unless I'm trying to deal with untargetable creatures, I'd rather have Inferno Titan all things considered.

It was certainly an unexpected, yet nice reprint back then.
Much more powerful and astonishingly looking than the original print from Portal.

That, name and flavor text all heavily suggest that this should be an Elemental Giant, however.
(And I'm not just saying that because it would make an interesting new choice for Elemental decks :D)
