what's not too love? its an endless board clearer and a flier for red. even if it is countered it is bound to come back. this is a highly underappreciated card. very difficult to be rid of and highly annoying.

Often used in Recurring Nightmare/Survival of the Fittest when you can just repeatedly replay this card from the grave to sac and kill small creatures. CounterPhoenix was also a popular deck.
Don't forget, the cost to play and retrieve the Phoenix are separated. You only use it when there are a lot of creatures to kill. You won't waste mana getting it back if there's only a few creatures, which your other burn spells usually handles well.
Besides, this is a creature, it can attack just like every other.
